Long time no see!

Tuesday's lesson was the first lesson this semester that I had with Mr.Paterson, as I caught flu and had been away from the lesson for a while. In the lesson, I got to know that this term we will be focusing on "referencing".

To start off with, in the groups we did the presentation with last semester, we discussed 3 questions together, that is

1. What things need a reference?
2. Why?
3. Have you learned about referencing before?

Most of the things were something that I knew from before, however, there were a few facts I did not acknowledge was a must-reference thing. For example, "controversial ideas". When I wrote a report for my social studies class, we needed to include ideas from different points of view. I did reference the news websites and newspapers that I got the opinion from, but a lot of people seemed to not have included such referencing. It was lucky of me since I did them, but through the lesson, I got to know that it is a must-include thing. Mr. Paterson told us minor opinions should mainly be referenced, but I thought if we could reference all ideas, that would be better unless it is a common fact.

Another thing is the difference between "paraphrase and quotation". This topic was completely new to me since I knew nothing about this until the lesson. Especially the fact '3 or more words in a row that are same as the original text is a quotation, less than that is a paraphrase' got me to feel surprised. I thought that I must be aware of this fact from today and on.

My first lesson on referencing contained multiple new findings, which lead me to have more curiosity in this field at the current moment. I also liked the lesson style where we get the time to think what we know so that the line of difference between the information we know and did not know is clear. However, I thought if we could get feedback from the teacher somehow on the ideas we discussed ourselves, it would be better.

Here are some notes from the class; rest is in group doc.
Controversial ideas should be referenced

More than 90% should be my idea, 10% could be a quotation
->paraphrase in most cases
Iconic phrases could be quotations

3 or more words in a row are same as the original text is a quotation. Less than that is a paraphrase
Meaning should be maintained.
