New knowledge

On the lesson on 28th of January, we again focused on referencing. As homework, we were to underline the parts of the essay that requires references. Although I had done them, I had mistaken it with doing with my previous essays (that is not for this class). Luckily, unluckily for Mr.Paterson, most of the class members hadn't done them. For this reason, we were given the time to do them in class. I quickly scanned to see the mentioned points. It was quite difficult to differentiate the difference between common knowledge and not so common knowledge.

As we went through some people's essay as a class, there was some information that is very new to me. For example, the fact where if the quotation we want to use is wrong, we first consider whether if we want to really use it, then if yes, copy and write "sic" in brackets. I used to think that I should copy paste the quotation even if it is wrong, so I was surprised to know about this. We have also covered the fact that we do not have to reference the same source twice, which means if we reference it once after the last quotation, is okay.

Towards the end of the lesson, what Mr.Paterson also taught us was probably the most shocking fact I've learned this lesson. It's the fact that we shouldn't use normal dictionaries to define terms especially the jargons. However, he added that we can use the ones that match the word's field, such as politics, science, social, etc.

Again, today's lesson was very helpful, since we have got to know how we should react to multiple situations when referencing. I am looking forward to knowing more about such facts through the lessons.
