Aren't media supposed to be reliable?

In the lesson on May 29th, we watched 2 videos about how media is not trustworthy. What I saw was something I wanted to look away from. I learnt that media does anything to keep us away from the facts they do not want to expose to us. I learnt this from the first video, where the Fox News' journalists tried to report the truth behind rBST, a dangerous chemical in milk. Just because they had the filter of 'advertisement', the company threatened the journalists saying that if they do not stop from broadcasting the real information they will fire all people who were taking part in the project. When the company knew they will quite the company (because they felt broadcasting untruthful information is wrong) they tried to buy the journalists, so that they will not spread any information outside. then the journalists were made to rewrite and edit the script for total 83 times until the milk company and the lawyer was satisfied. In the end, the company again told the journalists they will not be able to broadcast this news, and this whole project turned down. These journalists took this problem to court but lost just because presenting false information was not taken as guilty according to the law. This really made me feel anxious about the media that surrounds me, because what I see in my every day lives may not be the reality, or there may even be things behind the scenes I do not know that is harmful or putting us in danger. Despite this fact, we cannot go and find these things out ourselves, so the only way left us to know the information is through media. If we cannot trust media, what can we trust? The second video about the peaceful protestors was unbelievable. The protestors used not violence and caused no physical harm. In contrast, the police used the poisonous gas (I guess the name of it was tear gas spray), spread this right in front of their faces, forcing the protestors to move. Before how the media reported this, my heart was aching from the reality. I could not believe it was a human act- in fact even the dumbest animal wouldn't do that. I am pretty sure that the police knew that the citizens were in the weaker position, when they stood up just to say their opinion. How the media reported this was awful too. As I saw what has actually happened, I knew who were the victims, I knew who was wrong, I knew the way police attacked the protestors. The media though, broadcasted the news as if only the protestors were wrong. This got me frustrated but also made me understand the hardship of going over the stereotypes of how people think about police (trustful, justice, etc), and how media is cooperating in it.  In conclusion, I have understood that the mass media is not always letting us gain the true information, so we must look into the truth ourselves as much as possible. In the worst case, social media may also be a tool, as it does not get controlled by the 5 filters, that we learnt in the last lesson. I should more be on alert and be considering if the information is true, taking various point of views, in order to make sure that the presented context is reliable.
